You’re so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You’re so vain
I’ll bet you think this song is about you
Don’t you? Don’t you?
You’ve probably heard that chorus before. It makes me laugh. The chorus points not only at the individual the song was addressed to, but to human nature generally. I’ve come across people who like to feel important in situations that have little or nothing to do with them (did I say people? Well…OK….me too sometimes. We’ve all most likely been there). Yes there are cases where it’s about them but you probably know what I’m talking about.
In the story of salvation, the truth is it’s not about us. It’s not about our works, our character, and our ‘perfect’ lives. No sorry. It’s all about Christ. Long before we knew what a bible could be, Christ died for us. Long before we understood what Salvation meant, He hung on that tree. It is by His grace we are saved, it is by His grace that He redeemed us from the curse of the law. It is by His grace that we keep on, because it is Christ who works in us both to will and do of His good pleasure.
Let us not boast in our abilities, or trust in our activities. Your answered prayer is not because of how long you prayed. Your financial blessing is not because of how much you gave. It is about Christ and His Power. Let us not think what we do in our churches or in the body of Christ, trumps what Christ did on that cross. In all humility let whatever we do be born out of an appreciation of what He did. I say to you smile and remind yourself “It’s not about me.” It sure takes the burden off.
So dear reader, rest in His finished work and enjoy the salvation it brought, It’s not about you or me!
Living then, as every one of you does, in pure grace, it’s important that you not misinterpret yourselves as people who are bringing this goodness to God. No, God brings it all to you. The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what he does for us, not by what we are and what we do for him. (Romans 12:3 The Message)
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast (Ephesians 2:8-9 NKJV)
