Love is patient, love is kind….. it keeps no record of wrongs. …..Love never fails. (1 Corinthians 13:4-8)
1 Corinthians 13 is often used to remind us as Christians about how to love others. It is also important to reflect on it as revealing to us the nature of God. After all I John 4:8 says ‘God is love’; And by simple substitution if God is love, then God is patient and God is kind and God is all this wonderful things mentioned in 1 Corinthians 13.
Unfortunately overtime we often see God portrayed as the opposite of these attributes. God is not portrayed as patient and kind, instead He is portrayed as this horrible father who punishes His children at every chance He gets. Sometimes as a father who has no patience for imperfect children and sometimes even one that does not want the best for His children. The opposite is true!
When we reflect on God as a God of love, our eyes open up and see His love shown throughout the Bible. We see His patience with the Israelites when despite their constant murmuring and complaining, He provided for them constantly during their journey through the wilderness. We see the kindness of Jesus, from kind words to sinners like the woman caught in adultery, to being ready to walk miles to The Centurion’s house to heal his servant. We see Jesus refusing to send hungry people away, but instead feeding them. Even turning water to wine to save the groom from embarrassment.
When we see God as love, then we no longer doubt or struggle with Hebrews 10:17 which says ‘our sins and our lawless deeds God will remember no more’, After all we are reminded that ‘love does not keep a record of wrongs!’ So if the bible says ‘love does not keep a record of wrongs’. Why will we think God is keeping a record of ours?
As we spend time to reflect on the other attributes mentioned in 1 Corinthians 13, let’s dig deeper and see how they guide us too see a better picture of who God is, and how they reflect and point to a wonderful Father who loves us with an everlasting love and who is by nature Love.

This is so true. I am finding that how we view God has a direct impact on how we treat other people. If a person sees God as someone who is out to punish every infraction, they tend to treat people they think are sinners with unkindness, forgetting that the kindness of the Lord leads to repentance and that in reality were all God’s enemies before we became Christians. I am so glad to be meeting others that are pointing people to a loving Father who wants to help us not condemn us.

Thanks for your wonderful comment. The more we see God as the Loving father He is, the easier it is for us to love others and by consequence the easier it is for the world out there to embrace Him.
